Subsoil condition is an important consideration in the feasibility of the integral arrangement of a structure. The primary criterion is the need to support abutments on relatively flexible piles. Therefore, where load-bearing strata is near the surface, or where the use of short piles (i.e., less than 5 m in length) or caissons is planned, the site is not considered suitable for integral bridges.
